Not a bad read August 26, 2008 Dozza (Hampshire, UK) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I tend to agree with the "Good though not great" reviewer (also as I am listing mine for sale now I have read it!). It's not a bad book though not the 'Hold Em Bible' I am still looking for. Yes it is very American ('Bet to find out where you're at' - I hate it, though he does say 'where you are' occasionally too) and it is indeed full of exclamation marks but that's fine; it is readable. I disagree with the "Pretty mediocre" reveiwer though; he does not talk up his achievements that much. Many of the anectodatal wins are examples of lucky draws as much as any great skill played.
You should note that it mainly deals with Limit Hold Em; there is a bit on Pot Limit and No Limit but not much. I have only been playing the game on a PC game (TJ's WCP) and so far I win about 40% of the satellite games I play on difficult setting on No Limit (books have not helped me get that far; either I am quite good or I have learned how to beat the game - probably the latter!). For whatever reason I am hopeless on the Limit game; it also drives me crazy with the incessant clacking of the chips with so many bets. Anyway, I need more info on the No Limit game in the bible I continue to look for as this wasn't it although there is something to learn (should be if I read every book on the subject really).
Worth reading; please buy my book!
Useful, but not concise August 16, 2008 Burroski (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Phil Hellmuth is obviously a great poker player, and this book is useful in that it imparts some of his experiences and strategies. But I couldn't help feeling that much of the text, abound with plugs for his sponsors, could have been replaced by some clear diagrams.
The best i've read October 20, 2007 Ste (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
To keep it breif, this book really helped me improve my playing style. I think it's a great reference to have if you are a serious poker player, and I found the animal classifications he uses deadly accurate. It's easy to read and understand, and I believe it will help anyone raise their game.
Good, though not great August 14, 2006 K. M. MacLean (UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
First off, I have a confession to make, I'm only pulling my finger out to write this review because I'm putting a copy of this book up for sale. Still, I'll try to make it as helpful and unbiased as I can.
I bought this book essentially because I belong to the "read absolutely everthing on poker you possibly can" school of thinking and since Phil Hellmuth is, without doubt, one of the top players in the world today, it seemed worthwhile to read at least one of his books. At the time I bought this, I was a pure Hold'em player, so I chose this over "Play Poker Like the Pros". I've read this book a few times and, to be honest, shan't be entirely sorry if it doesn't sell. In spite of the fact that Hellmuth's writing style is not the best (there are far too many exclamation marks in the text) and he does demonstrate his well-known tendency for self-publicity, there is actually a lot of helpful content in here. The beginner's section on playing super-tight and watching your opponents is spot on as far as I'm concerned. It's the intermediate and advanced sections which I find a bit more controversial. However, that, oddly enough, is the real strength of the book. Although I found myself thinking "yes, but..." on a number of occasions, I could actually see where Hellmuth was coming from and this book really helped me to think more creatively (and aggressively) about my play. It's not the best book on Hold'em around, but I still think it's worth reading and re-reading. I'm putting it up for sale as I'm really short on storage space, but I shan't be too sorry it is doesn't go.
Buy if you just want to master hold'em April 24, 2006 P. Garland (Worthing, England) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Now I know Phil "The Poker Brat" Hellmuth's actions on the poker tables are sometimes unsporting. But you can't deny that the guy knows his hold'em tournaments [9 WSOP bracelets, quite an acheivement.] so there is no-one better to learn tournament hold'em then with Phil Hellmuth, great tips for learning the basics, the intermediate and advanced tips really come out on their own and the tournament strategies are second-to-none. Granted he does talk about himself a lot, but then he is proof that the strategy works. However, buy this if you only want to play hold'em tournaments, for other games and/or cash games, it is best to find a book written by someone who is more diverse [Hellmuth, great tournament player, but no cash-game specialist.]
