5 out of 5 stars 25 books on limit holdem poker and this is the best.....   August 27, 2005

....I've found so far. I've always been fascinated by poker, but never really understood it until I happened to spot the book by Phil Hellman (Play Poker like the Pros) in a US bookstore that gave me my first intro and pushed me to give it a go online. Hellman's book is ok (but not great) and I blew my initial bankrolls a couple of times, so I progressed through most of the other best sellers on poker until I got to this one. As someone that now welcomes those that don't know what they're doing, it's almost certainly a poker mistake to give away good sources of information (but I've had a couple of glasses of wine and couldn't resist it whilst browsing for new poker books), but this is the best I've come across. If you're a complete beginner, read a few of the other books before you take this one on (I recommend Lee Jones and Matthew Hilger), but if you really want to progress with limit holdem, this book is a must. It goes into the same subject areas as other books (pre-flop, flop, turn, and river play), but the rationale behind what to do in various situations is excellent, and it's backed up by the most comprehensive Q&A sections in a poker book that I've come across. For the sake of my own continuing winning chances, please don't buy it, or if you do, please don't play on PartyPoker !!

5 out of 5 stars I cannot recommend this book highly enough   October 12, 2004

Having being playing internet Hold'em poker for about 4 years and showing a very modest profit overall ( with plenty of losing periods!!), I have read all the usual suspects in poker strategy books.

The big difference with this book is over 400 worked examples on a Q and A basis that end the sections covering the various stages of play. By comparing and considering my own answers with those of the authors together with the rationale given, I have changed and improved my game and profitability considerably.

There is a lot of very sound advice in this book and a lot to take in - I have read and re-read it several times and I will continue to do so.

For the player with a good background in the game and who is playing middle limit Hold'em ie $10/20 up to $40/80, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent way to learn Holdem poker   March 17, 2003

This book consists of more than 500 examples of poker hands from real play. A description of the play is given followed by the problem, the reader must decide the best course of action before checking the answer. The answers are always very detailed often giving explanations refering to pot odds, previous play by opponents etc. The material is nicely divided up throughout the book, meaning that you can give special consideration to a part of the game that you feel is lacking.
Despite the title i cant help thinking that this book will be useful for all poker players irrespective of the limits that you play. Even if you are used to games much tighter or looser than the types of examples presented here, an awareness of some of the thought processes that a poker player must acquire can only be a good thing.
In conclusion, Ive always thought that the weakness of other poker books is the lack of examples that illustrate specific points. This book more than makes up for it.
