1 out of 5 stars Poor   November 10, 2009
G. Chianelli (London)
I am not the best poker player however in the last 2 months I am a moderate winner at least in small stakes, however I beleive i have a decent understanding of the maths behind the poker ,certainly some of the concepts in these book are wrong so if you are a decent player or at least try your best to be one save your money do not bet on this book it is fairly unlikely that you will improve in a consistent manner unless you rely on luck anfd therefore you are doomed any way..

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not that readable   October 26, 2008

This book makes some good points, but is very wordy and hard to follow at times

3 out of 5 stars This is a LIMIT Hold'em book   January 10, 2007

I do think the title of this book ought to have made it more clear that this is a book aimed at Limit Hold'em. It's certainly a decent read for those who like to play this form of poker but I would look around elsewhere if you prefer the aggression of No Limit.

5 out of 5 stars Not an easy read, but very worthwhile   August 14, 2006

I didn't find this book at all easy going at first and I needed to read and reread other books such as Winning Low-Limit Hold'Em by Lee Jones and Hold'Em Excellence from Beginner to Winner by Lou Krieger before I managed to get my head around it. Having said that, I started my poker journey on the internet and, like Killer Poker Online, this is not a book which teaches you how to play poker, it's a book which teaches you to adapt to internet play. Where Vorhous' book is essentially conceptual, making you think about why you do what you do and what mental and physical adaptations you need to make in order to play your peak game, Hilger's book takes a nuts and bolts approach, going into each aspect of Hold'em play (e.g. hand selection, play on the flop from each position etc. (and analyzing it in detail). This book is nothing like the easy read Vorhous' book is, but it will improve your game. I have now, finally, absorbed it and am moving on. NB: this book refers purely to LIMIT hold'em, which is probably the safest (for a beginner's bankroll) and most popular game on the internet, but if your heart's set on PL or NL, this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Online Poker Bible   June 9, 2006

A brilliant reference point. I don't believe massively in implied pot odds but if you want a good basis with which to learn about online play then here is a good start. Plenty of real life internet hands to strategise with, and lots of theory.

Hilger is a poker pro who has had some legit success in large tournaments which puts him ahead of some other poker authors. He explains things simply but in enough detail to be comprehensive. I would suggest any player who knows the rules, but wants to take their game to another level will benefit greatly from this book. Excellent sections on playing middle/bottom pair, everything makes sense and is logical. A good poker base.

Especially recommended is a very realistic bankroll chapter which is worth the price of the book alone. Hilger also runs a successful website with forums that you will also get given the address for and can use.
