| Customer Reviews: Slim chance! September 29, 2009 StealthTax (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is yet another slim, self-published book about poker. It's great that the net allows would-be authors to get into print, but sometimes the results are sub-standard. This, I fear, is such an occasion. The Next Level is very heavy on numbers and statistics. That's not a bad thing, but it is worrying when the author admits to having got some of his numbers by dealing cards around the kitchen table, rather than using a computer. One wonders what his sample-sizes were! And some of the stats are rather puzzling: for example we learn that the odds of being dealt pocket Aces is 220 to 1 (correct), but the odds of being dealt pocket Kings is 110 to 1... while it's 72 to 1 against being dealt Queens or Jacks?? I think I know what he's trying so say, but it does not inspire confidence.
The author's credentials are also somewhat obscure. He makes much of winning 'Player of the Year', but it's not made clear who awards this title or what it means. Nearly all the book seems to be concerned with tournament Hold'em, but insufficient weight seems to be given to the changing value of starting hands through the course of a tournament.
The explanation of how to calculate pot-odds is, frankly, baffling and the author's references to big-bets and small-bets raises the suspicion that parts of this work may be rehashed from a limit hold'em book.
There is a short section on cash game play, but it is very disappointing. The only advice seems to be 'quit while you're ahead', and no consideration is given to the fundamentally different nature of cash game poker. Worse still, the author suggests that you can assess you cash game ability through monitoring your tournament play - he claims that if you are up at any time during most of your tournaments, then you will do well at cash games because you can quit at the point you are ahead. In reality tournaments and cash games are so different that success in one will NOT often lead to success in the other.
On the plus side, there are some interesting hold'em stats in this book that I have not seen elsewhere. Assuming they are accurate, they might be worth the modest cover price. But don't imagine this book will teach you how to play hold'em if you don't already know - it will not.
A different kind of Poker book April 24, 2009 D. Walker (Hants UK) The Author, Bruce Winter has tried to distill his lifetime's experience into 1 pretty slim volume and clearly gives you his 'take' on how 'good' Poker should be played.
An honest & straightforward guide that will be a useful addition to any serious players library.
Good points include: Step-by-step guidance on how Bruce approaches different 'hand types', (drawing vs pairs vs premium) at different stages of a tourney.
Also, some great Starting hand tables that really drill home the power of the hand you're holding vs 1 or more opponents.
Some decent tips on Bluffing but nothing too exciting. It is interesting though, to read Bruce's opinion regarding common 'Tells'.
Bad points: This book is too short. Everything feels 'compressed', as though the Author was told to keep it under x amount of pages. It really would benefit from many more hand examples to illustrate his philosophy & playing style better.
This is certainly 'all meat' but really needs the 'seasoning' of illustration to turn a decent book into something that could have been special. Its hard to blame the Author. He's a real poker player 'not' an Author but he really could go much further with what I presume is a summary of his decades of experience. If he could collaborate with a fellow player whom he respects and could work with I believe it would make that leap possible.
The website to promote this book is just a salespage that currently has no updates, forum or even a way to contact the Author.
Who would benefit most from its purchase?
Well, the Tables are of use to every player but its likely that serious hobby players like myself will actually benefit most from them. True Pro's are likely to already be aware of them and beginners may not appreciate how to use them.
Yes, its worth the surprisingly low cost but it really could have been something special like Harrington or Snyder and those are 3 or 4 times the size of this and neither gets accused of having much fluff inside their covers.
Watch out, new poker shark about! Love it. August 11, 2008 Thomas Brydon (London, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I absolutely love this book - it's made me rich (well, not rich, but taken a few bucks from my mates). I have tried reading various other Texas hold'em books, but this is the first one I have actually learnt something from. I usually get bored reading this type of book and don't have the patience, but this one just made me want to learn more.
I am not a serious player, but like to have the odd game with friends at home. My mate recommended it to me and I think he regrets it now as I am onto his game! Seriously, this book will help your game no end and explains strategy in a very clear way.
